The Whisper: Part One

It started two weeks ago. It was just a normal day. The sun was shining, and the sky was clear. Kids laughed and played outside. Adults were at home or at work. Then, it happened. Suddenly, large, dark clouds moved in. They quickly covered the sky, darkening it. People continued with their day. The clouds were due to clear in just a few days, the weatherman said. It’ll be gone in a few days, folks.  Sally looked forward to the sunlight.

But it never came. Two weeks after being surrounded by darkness, the clouds never left. They stayed. The clouds hung over, like a black fog.

Then, a few days ago, there was a report of someone dead in their home in front of the TV. No visible explanation, no weapon, no nothing. Then, there was another body outside on the pavement of a driveway. The car was left on, idling. The door had broken off. No murder weapon in sight. The next day, a body was found in his own boat. Blood everywhere.

The police sent out a mass search for the murderer. Everyone was told to stay inside. Keep all doors locked and not let anyone in.

Sally took a peek out the window, watching the police remove a dead body from her neighbor’s porch. She’d heard about everything, but wasn’t sure what to make of it. As she started to walk away from the window, she heard something.

It sounded like a voice. A whisper in her ear.

They hurt us.

Sally looked around, not sure what she had heard at first. She shrugged and continued observing outside.

They hurt us. They hurt us.

Again she shrugged. Overactive imagination. Sally walked away from the window and back to her room.

They hurt us. They hurt us. THEY HURT US!

This time she stopped. It was clear as day. A disembodied voice yelled at her. She looked around for the source. But there was nobody it could come from. Sally was alone in the house that day.

Sally. She slowly turned around. The sound was coming from the closet.
