Marks

It was on a Monday morning. The sky was still black, the stars barely visible in the city smog. Occasional cars drove by, leaving a brief flash of light.

Inside a house with a blue car in the driveway, a man woke up. It was the first day of his new job, and he was excited. It was his dream job. Turning to his left, he turned on the lamp. Light flooded the room immediately. Then he got up and went to the bathroom. He flicked the light on and began to get ready. The man washed up, got ready, and left.

He made his coffee and ate a quick meal. The light gradually increased outside. Once he finished, the man left for work in his blue car.

It was nearly dark when the man returned. The sky was a pretty orange color, and a layer of fog settled onto the houses. The man walked into his house and went to use the bathroom. When he entered, he washed his face and looked into the mirror. He noticed smudge marks on the bathroom mirror. He stared, wondering how they got there. Then he thought back to the morning and nodded. So the man shrugged and went about his business. Then he cooked, ate dinner, and went to bed.

The next morning, he woke up and went about his business again. Then he left his blue car. The early morning hours gave him a thrill. As he left, he couldn’t wait to return home and make some dinner he’d been wanting to make.  Hours later, the man returned.

When he walked in, he noticed that the bathroom door was left open. Rolling his eyes, he walked in. There were dirty marks on the mirror. Shrugging, the man left and grabbed some spray. He sprayed the marks, and they disappeared.

The next day, the man returned home. He was enjoying his time and decided to enjoy his day off. As he sat watching TV, he thought he heard something. It sounded like a thump. Turning around, he looked to see. But there was nothing. He noticed his phone was missing again. So he looked around for it. After a little while of looking, he finally found it in his bathroom. The man scratched his head, wondering how it got there. It had smudge marks on it. Like someone had picked it up and carried it somewhere. The man shook his head. Man, I must have been really spacey yesterday. How did I leave this in here?

The next day, the man went to the mirror to wash up for work. He noticed the smudge marks. It looked like dirty old toothpaste. Now he was annoyed.

I want my mirror to look clean and shiny; why does it look like this? So again, he grabbed spray and wiped it away. Then the man went about his day. Before he left, he realized that he had left his phone in the bathroom again. When the man went to get it, he couldn’t find it initially.

He looked around for it. After a little bit, he finally found it. It was in the bathtub. The man wondered why it had ended up there. He picked it up and put it into his pocket.

When he walked into the bathroom to wash up and go to bed, he noticed something strange. The glass. It was shinier than it should have been. And the smudges. His eye widened. They didn’t look like dirt smudges. Or regular smudges.

It was fingerprints. The man put his hand up to the glass. As soon as he did that, something grabbed his hand and immediately started pulling it. The man struggled to rip his arm free. As he did so, he looked into the mirror. It was him. Another him. Pulling to get out of the mirror. It grinned, its eyes wide.

The man looked around for something to break free, and he found a hair dryer. He threw it into the mirror, shattering it.  The pieces flew everywhere.

A scream echoed and faded away.
